Dr Vicky O’Dwyer MD, MRCPI, MRCOG

Dr Vicky O’Dwyer is a Consultant Obstetrician and Director of Gynaecology at the Rotunda Hospital. She has a special interest in preventing preterm birth and caring for women with pre-existing medical conditions who are pregnant. She completed a maternal medicine fellowship in 2017 and ran a National preterm prevention clinic before joining the Rotunda in 2019.

She spent 2 years working in the UCD Centre for Human Reproduction exploring the relationship between maternal body composition and caesarean section. She has a medical doctorate and has published extensively on the topic of the caesarean section.

Vicky says “I love my job. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else”. “The most rewarding part is to look after someone through their pregnancy, whether it is straightforward or there are a few bumps in the road, and to see them at the end of the journey both happy and well.” Vicky is a mum of three children. “I think having bBioeen pregnant and having children has made me a better obstetrician”

About me

M.D Thesis: Maternal body composition and caesarean section

The purpose of my Thesis was to explore the relationship between caesarean section and maternal obesity in depth. Maternal obesity was measured using body mass index and waist circumference calculated accurately in the first trimester and by the direct measurement of maternal body composition using advanced multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis.

The Thesis showed that if the adverse consequences of maternal obesity are to be prevented the focus needs to be on first time mothers and, probably should be on pre-pregnancy care as well as gestational weight gain management. If obesity levels in first time mothers fall, then emergency caesarean section rates should fall and thus elective repeat caesarean section rates in multigravidas should fall. This will not only improve the obstetric outcomes for women, but will also decrease healthcare costs associated with increased length of hospital stay after caesarean section.
